The Row2Rio team are heading off on Leg 2 of their epic Olympic inspired challenge today following the successful completion of cycling from the London Olympic Park to Lagos in Portugal in just 23 days!
“The last few weeks for the team have been an absolute whirlwind. On the final day of our cycle we got the sad news that team member Johnny would be unable to take part in the row due to an appendix problem. This left us in the horrible position of either calling off the expedition or looking for someone to step into this extreme challenge with just two weeks to go. With luck on our side we were fortunate enough to be put in touch with a guy who not only was willing to take on the challenge but fitted in with the team. Within two days he packed up his life in Thailand and travelled to meet us in the UK. To see details of our newest team member, Luke, see his profile on our website”
We are proud to kit the team out for Leg 2 with waterproof essentials including our Ultra Grip Gloves, Trail Hat, Beanie Hat and Thin Ankle Socks with Hydrostop to ensure they are kept warm and dry on their voyage across the Atlantic. “SealSkinz products were really invaluable for the cycle and I know they're going to be essential kit for our Atlantic Row!”
“We will be heading off towards the Canaries to start with, then down towards Cape Verde, probably passing to the East to keep us in favourable currents and winds. We will then continue to push south, and may even head in a little further East to make use of favourable currents before we turn out west towards Brazil. Don't panic if it looks like we have forgotten to go West - we will eventually! Our aim is to reach Recife in Eastern Brazil, we're really excited about pioneering this new route, but this does mean we are testing it out. If conditions don't allow us to make landfall at Recife we have lots of back up options planned and will provide updates on the plan nearer the time.”
We will be following the Row2Rio team and wish them luck on Leg 2. To follow their GPS tracker, download the 'YB Races' app on your phone to follow them.
As well as doing this pioneering new route (no one has ever attempted a route like this at all), and getting several Guinness World Records, the main aim of this trip is to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan cancer support. To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/Row2rio2016 or donations can be made by text message from the UK, this is done by texting our code RRIO88 and the amount to donate (£1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10) to the number 70070. For example to donate £5 you would send a text to 70070 saying: RRIO88 £5
